Turn Your HVAC System Off And On Again
Have you tried turning your HVAC system off and then on again? You might hear this all the time with other electronics like computers, televisions and smartphones, but it’s not a common solution for HVAC systems.
Newer furnaces, air conditioners, ductless air conditioners, boilers and other HVAC system components are filled with electronics and computers of their own. That means if they’re experiencing an error or aren’t working properly it might be worth turning them off and then on again.
Let’s be clear, this is something that should be done only after checking things like filters condensate lines and other places where general maintenance should be performed.
Most HVAC systems have at least two breakers in different parts of the house. For example, an air conditioner should have a double-wide breaker inside your main breaker box, as well as a breaker on the outside of the house. This outside breaker is housed in a little box of its own, hanging on the house very close to the outdoor unit.
Both of these breakers will need to be reset if the problem is with the computer that’s simply confused by a strange action. This can actually result if you’ve lost power due to a storm or heat wave
You can give it a try yourself by flipping the breaker inside your house to the “off” position, then go to the outside breaker box next to your air conditioner and flip that switch. Typically, it’s as simple as flipping a switch, but depending on the type of technology inside the box you might have to pull a fuse out and put it back in. Once you’ve done that, you can go back inside and turn the power in the main breaker box in your house.
