Money Saving Air Conditioning Tips

Money Saving Air Conditioning Tips

If you live somewhere with more moderate summer temperatures like Northern Ontario then you may not need central air conditioning. If you live in an older home you might not have the luxury of central air conditioning and have to rely on other types of air conditioning. Even if you live in Toronto, York Region or the rest of the GTA you might find that in the spring, fall and even through the summer you don’t need your air conditioner to be running. One of the best ways to take advantage of cooler temperatures is to open your windows and let the fresh cool air in throughout the evening. When the temperature rises through the day close your windows and shades to moderate your house temperature. This is a great way to save money on your energy bills when the temperature isn’t at a point where you absolutely need your air conditioner.

Window Air Conditioning

If you have a window air conditioner you probably know how difficult it is to regulate the temperature in a room or floor of a house with one. The thermostat is in the actual window unit, which means it turns on and off as the air surrounding the unit reaches a temperature, not the entire space. One of the best ways to help your unit achieve a temperature setting is to enhance the distribution of the cool air with fans. Alternatively, we recommend ditching your window unit and investing in a long-term solution like a ductless air conditioner. Aside from the initial investment, they work so efficiently that they will actually save you money in the long run.

There are a number of ways to help your air conditioning system be more efficient. By sealing up doors and windows so hot air isn’t coming in and cool air isn’t escaping you can improve your system’s efficiency. Turning off lights when they’re not needed and blocking the sun with drapes and blinds can also keep the temperature of your home lower. When it’s really hot out and your air conditioner has to work overtime, avoid using large appliances that give off lots of heat like a washer, dryer, dishwasher or any other large on-demand appliance. Using the BBQ can also help keep your home cool.
